ADA tactile & braille sign

Code-mandated permanent-room signage with raised characters and Grade 2 braille, built to the ADA Standards for restrooms, exits, room IDs, and stairwells.

What it is

A tactile sign carrying raised, sans-serif uppercase characters paired with contracted (Grade 2) braille, used to identify permanent rooms and spaces so the signage can be read by touch. It's the legally required wayfinding layer mandated by the ADA Standards for Accessible Design, not a design choice.

Choose it when

Choose this whenever a sign identifies a permanent room or space (restroom, exit, stairwell, numbered office). A printed or dimensional letter sign can name the room, but only a tactile-and-braille sign mounted to spec meets the ADA Standards.

Strengths

  • Satisfies a legal requirement that other signage cannot, so it removes ADA liability for permanent-room ID
  • Readable by touch and by sight, with raised characters and braille on one plate
  • Photopolymer and thermoformed builds are one solid piece, so there are no beads or appliqué layers to pry off
  • Long service life indoors with no power, moving parts, or maintenance

Watch-outs

  • Strict geometry leaves little design freedom: uppercase only, sans-serif, non-glare finish, set character heights
  • Mounting position is regulated, not optional, so sloppy installation can fail inspection even with a correct sign
  • Raster-bead and appliqué builds are cheaper but the least durable, since beads and layers can be removed
  • Braille must be correctly translated to Grade 2 or the sign is non-compliant despite looking right

Not the right call for: Directional or overhead wayfinding signs, which are visual-only and don't carry tactile requirements the same way · Temporary or movable room labels (ADA tactile rules apply to permanent rooms and spaces) · Anything where you need full color photography or fine serif type · Backlit or illuminated identification (tactile signs use a non-glare face, not a lit one)
