Polycarbonate (impact-resistant glazing)
Near-unbreakable rigid sheet for impact, safety, and vandal-resistant signage.
“Near-unbreakable, but UV-grade outdoors or it yellows.”
Good to know
- It's nearly unbreakable, but standard grade yellows outdoors. The toughness you're paying for only holds up if you spec UV-grade.
What it is
A clear or tinted rigid plastic sheet roughly 200× stronger than glass. It goes where impact resistance matters. Standard grades aren't UV-stable, though, so UV-grade is mandatory outdoors.
Choose it when
Impact, safety, or vandal resistance matters. Choose it over acrylic when the sign might get hit, and always spec UV-grade outdoors.
Strengths
- ~200× the impact strength of glass
- Can be backlit
- Long-lived in UV-grade
Watch-outs
- – Standard grade yellows in UV; UV-grade required outdoors
- – Premium cost
- – Scratches more easily than glass
Not the right call for: Budget jobs · Anywhere impact resistance isn't actually needed (acrylic is cheaper)
Where this fits in our work
We don't stop at the print. Polycarbonate (impact-resistant glazing) runs through the same network that specs and fabricates it, then installs it on site. The work behind it:
